PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Junior first baseman Matt Dittman (Libertyville, Ill.) was named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Dittman led the Illini at last weekend's Caravelle Resort Classic hosted by No. 12 Coastal Carolina, hitting .615 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .722 on-base percentage. It is Dittman's second career weekly honor as he also earned the award on April 13, 2009.
Dittman scored seven runs and drove in five over the weekend, including his first home run of the year. He also recorded two multiple-hit games to raise his average to a Big Ten-leading .563. He also led the Illini to a win over the No. 12 Chanticleers by going 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.
The Illini return to action on Thursday against Bucknell at 2 p.m. CT to begin their annual Spring Trip. Illinois will play six games in seven days in Winter Haven, Fla., at the former spring training complex of the Cleveland Indians.
